During the winter months, the weather can have an impact on our mood and wellbeing. Particularly because of the lack of day light and exposure to sunlight during the shorter autumn and winter days.

Seasonal Depression is characterized by feelings of despair and worthlessness, anxiety, a persistent low mood, lacking in energy during the day, feeling sleepy during the day and finding it difficult to wake up in the mornings.

Whilst the exact cause of SAD has not been thoroughly researched by researchers, they have linked it to that lack of sunlight and a lack of sunlight may stop the hypothalamus (a part of the brain) from working properly. This in turn can affect the production of melatonin, serotonin and the body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm). Melatonin makes you feel sleepy and people with SAD tend to produce higher levels of it, hence the day time sleepiness. Serotonin on the other hand affects mood and appetite, a lack of sunlight have an impact.

Treating SAD does not have to be complicated.

Treatments such as light therapy, lifestyle measures and counselling can be helpful in managing sad. Getting as much exposure to sunlight can help and manage your stress levels where you can.
