Podcasts over the last couple of years have really taken the world by storm. Whilst blog posts are still lovable, podcasts gives you a different experience. Its almost as if you are in the recording room, whilst the podcast is taking place. The words, voice and tone that booms through those ear pods of yours, allows you to formulate your own thoughts and mentally take part in this audible discussion.

Over the last couple of years its been a pleasure to listen to podcasters from all around the world. Here are a few podcasts that have supported and engaged my mind, thoughts and feelings and that I continue to listen to.

Therapy for Black Girls hosted by Dr. Joy Harden Bradford

Therapy for Black Girls is a podcast hosted by a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia - USA.

Dr Joy talks all things mental health from social anxiety to the fear of rejection. She also has an ‘on the couch’ series, where she brings popular characters from shows like ‘Insecure’ and ‘Power’ and takes a look at these characters and reflects upon what interventions she would use if they were to walk into the psychotherapy room. Dr. Joy often has guest podcasters on her show discussing their field of expertise adding to the topic or theme of the show.

AFFIRM by Redefine Enough hosted by Davia Roberts

Hosted by Davia Roberts, based in Washington DC, USA. A former licensed therapist now a consultant for women in wellness, supporting them so they can “recreate balance + gain clarity in their careers too”. The beginning of the podcast often started off with an affirmation, which for me set the mood and gave me an idea of what was to come in the episode. The podcast sadly ended in October 2019, however past episode are still up to indulge in.

Adzvice hosted by Bonita Rochelle and Ade Akins

Clarity on Fire hosted by Rachel East and Kristen Walker

One particular episode that drew my eye to this witty podcast was “Side Chat: Curing your people-pleasing disease”. As a recovering people-pleaser it was interesting to understand their take on people pleasing and ways to combat this childhood coping mechanism.

They jump into the podcast and head straight to the point. Every time I tune in, I find myself feeling like I’m in the room where the podcast is taking place. Char is a travel blogger and Jess D owns her own makeup line MakeUp by JessD.

The Bodyful Black Girl hosted by Jennifer Sterling

Hosted by Jennifer Sterling, a Registered Dance Movement Psychotherapist and Holistic Nutritionist based in New York City, USA. Jennifer As a fellow Dance Movement Psychotherapist and a Black Woman, I was overwhelmed and joyful at the same time when I discovered the Bodyful Black Girl. Its rare to see a podcast that focuses on the body, mental health and movement and shares the beautiful benefits of Dance Movement Psychotherapy. Jennifer discusses “all things body, movement and mental health”.

Hosted by Natalie Lue, Lue explores and reflects upon the emotional baggage that we carry around with us unconsciously. She expanded her popular blog, which informs you on how to live and love with self-esteem by “unpacking, decluttering and tidying up our excess emotional baggage”. I must admit that when I would visit the The Baggage Reclaim blog, I would find myself deep in thought and reflect upon my relationship patterns and how I can unpack my emotional baggage in a healthy way.
