How to flourish in your new job

Starting a new job can be daunting and exciting - how do these feelings co-exist? It’s normal to feel such emotions though, particularly if you’ve been job hunting for a long time. I started my first qualified job as a Psychotherapist early this year in January and felt an increasing amount of nerves mixed with excitement.

Getting to grips with your new job role can be nerve wrecking for some and the opposite for others, but remember that you are not alone.

Get to know your new team

Get to know your immediate team if you’re in a big company and with time get to know the wider team. Get to know how your team operates, who works where and who does what. This includes getting to know your supervisor or manager and don’t be afraid to ask for any advice on getting started in your new role.

Find out where everything is
Locate where things are in your new work environments, from pots of pens to the important documents. Of course, you can ask your colleagues, however what do you do if you need something and everyone is busy? It can be beneficial to know where the majority of things you need are.

Get organised

Keep a personal diary on deck and note any important dates down. Know when your projects are due and try to be efficient in managing your time. On tips on how to manage your time read: How to effectively manage your time

Ask for help

There are times when asking for helping can save you from making a costly mistake. That’s manager’s exist, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. Every company has their own way of doing things, so learn accordingly. Whether its learning the new database system or a new form filing, ask for help.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes

On the other hand, making mistakes are a part of the learning process. Some of us may find it distressing to make mistakes, but sometimes its inevitable to make the odd mistake there and here.
