No matter where you are in your career, gaining new skills and acquiring new knowledge is always a bonus.

Online courses have been around since 1989 and they have simply evolved over time. Platforms like Udemy, YouTube and many more has allowed us as humans to develop our skills and knowledge without having to pay a fortune. Online courses can be a good way to prepare for a career change, particularly if you lack experience, skills and knowledge in a particular sector.

For me online learning has been alternative way for me to acquire new knowledge. As a Psychotherapist, continuing professional development (CPD) is a yearly requirement, so I am always searching for new ways to develop my skills set and knowledge.

Here are 5 educational platforms to build your knowledge and develop your skills

Udemy

Founded in May of 2010, Udemy has over 57,000 instructors with courses in over 65 languages. Udemy courses are often affordable and discounted, allowing you to upskill in different courses. Its flexible and good for learning practical skills like coding, although course quality can vary.

Future Learn

Founded in December of 2012, Future Learn is currently my favourite platform to acquire new knowledge. The courses are free and if you want a certificate at the end of course, then there is a fee to pay of course. I recently finished a course on “Introduction to Psychology: The Psychology of Personality” delivered by Monash University and just started another course on “Learning and Memory: Understandings from Educational Neuroscience” delivered by Central Queensland University. What I love about Future Learn is that you can learn at your own pace and its very flexible.

Coursera

Founded in 2012 by Computer Science Professors at Stanford. Coursera is a great platform that offers courses from top universities such as Stanford, Imperial College London, Duke University and more. Membership is free with the option to buy courses or take a free course. This platform is great for learning subjects such as computer science, data science and languages.

Teachable

Founded in 2014.

I discovered Teachable a couple of years back and even thought of delivering a course on there myself. Teachable actually allows you to create and sell courses, so if you have a skill that you would like to share and teach, this might be the platform for you. You can pick up a skill in almost anything, from yoga to photography to art.

YouTube

YouTube is great for learning practical skills such as hairdressing, baking and cooking — the tutorials are endless! I have also found that its great for learning about mental health and fitness.
